LECTURE

In the first lecture, we were introduced to the importance of using Photoshop. Unlike other applications like Canva, Photoshop gives people more features to create their designs rather than just taking them from others.

People usually use Photoshop for:

Photograph Manipulation
With Photoshop, it is more than possible to transfigure, alter, and combine any image to create a desired piece using techniques and tools for Photoshop.

Figure 1.1 Photo Manipulation (4/10/2023)
This is an example of photograph manipulation where Herarld was inserted in the Goebbels family portrait photo even though he was not present then.

Digital Imaging
Includes the conversion of printed text, artwork, and photographs into a constructed piece of image.

Exercise/ Week 1

We were assigned to explore Pinterest and find several illustration compositions that fit our likings
Pinterest Board: https://id.pinterest.com/rafahertrian/dpi/
From the images we saved, we were told to choose 3 of our favorites and explain the components that caught our attention

Composition 1

Figure 1.2.1 Composition 1

Description
: This poster caught my attention by the color contrast of the main object and the background, the blue background makes the warm toned main illustration stands out. I am also interested by the content of the poster as it is expressed with vintage object consistently.

This poster expressed:
  • The title of this poster is “The Insatiable Student” and is a collage illustration for Rice University’s continuing Education program.
  • This image illustrates things that are usually on students’ mind in terms of education
  • Money: represents courses such as finance, business, accounting
  • Violin: Represents music major
  • Compass tool: might be used by architect students or interior design
  • Globe: international relation or geography
  • Typing machine: Journalism

Composition 2

Figure 1.2.2 Composition 2

Description: At first glance, I was really intrigued by how the artist emphasizes the eyes of the figure that is crying showing sad emotion and message for the poster. I am also very interested on how the illustrator uses letters from magazines which embrace pop art style.

The poster expresses:

  • “A star is born” I think this phrase is added to the poster to show the reality of being a star, celebrity, or public figures in general

  • The poster reminds people that what public figures show in their job might not represent who they actually are

  • The smoke in the hand expresses bad coping mechanism for public figures to deal with their stress

  • The tear in the eyes shows how they actually feel inside

  • The lips with dark pigment might represent their overall physical health

Composition 3

Figure 1.2.3 Composition 3

Description: This illustration catch my eyes since I am familiar with the photograph. However, I was more interested by how that black and white image is mixed with a colorful painting with a Nouveau art style.

The poster expresses:
  • The photograph is a popular image of a sailor kisssing a random nurse at VJ day Times square. This was when Japan first surrender WWII
  • The photograph is controversial since the woman was kissed without her consent
  • The painting that is matched with the photograph is called “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt
  • Just like the photograph, the painting at the period of time it was made was controversial because of the intimacy showned.
Composition 4
Figure 1.2.4 Composition 4

Description: When I first saw this poster, I was impressed by the illustration, which also expresses the message.

This Poster expressed :

This illustration is for 5 Corporation’s “5 Days,” a private preparatory school in Japan.

The theme of this time is "Summer Special Training".

The concept is "Let's enjoy and study during the summer".

Create ‘5’ island and ‘5’ is the symbol of this corporation.

It shows children are studying by themselve
