LECTURE

Introduction to Composition

  • Focal point: important to help the viewers' eyes settle on the significant part of your design easily
  • Scale and Hierarchy: hierarchy is presented using scale by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements
  • Balance the Elements: Each element has weight to it - smaller objects weigh less than larger objects and objects with heavy textures weigh more than flatly colored elements
  • White Space/ empty space: Balance up and clarify the composition - helps your design to breathe
Figure 2.1 Example of white space

Rule of Thirds

  • Definition: Dividing an image into thirds, two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. This creates nine parts and 4 intersection points in an image.
Figure 2.2.1 Thirds imaginary grid

  • Suggestions: place important elements of the image in the intersection and any horizon should be placed either above or below the horizontal lines.
Figure 2.2.2 Rule of thirds usage example
  • Rule of thirds can be used to apply negative spaces in a creative way
  • Rule of thirds helps us identify composition techniques that are naturally pleasing to the eyes.
  • Connection between subject and background

Golden Ratio

  • Definition: it is a mathematical ratio. It creates organic and natural composition as it is commonly found in nature.
Figure 2.3.1 Golden Ratio

Figure 2.3.2 Golden ratio in natural images
  • Golden ratio in designs: it creates a sense of beauty through harmony and proportion. It also constructs a more artistry composition.
  • Determining dimensions of a layout: set up 1:1.618

Composition (Framing and Cropping)

Framing
  • Single: one character in the frame as the primary focus. A clean single is when no part of any other character is visible in the frame and it is best used to represent a character's isolation. While a dirty single shows a little portion of another character in the frame.
Figure 2.4.1 Clean single-shot example https://youtu.be/qQNiqzuXjoM?si=VoVyvQF1NY-Axsel

Figure 2.4.2 Dirty single-shot example https://youtu.be/qQNiqzuXjoM?si=VoVyvQF1NY-Axsel
  • Two shots: when two characters are framed together. This is to create a visual relationship between the characters which might be affectionate, tenacious, or imaginary
Figure 2.4.3 Two shots example
  • The name of frame shots that have more than two people can be called its amount. However, if it cannot be counted in a glimpse then it is called a crowd shot.
Figure 2.4.4 Crowd shot example
  • Over-the-shoulder shot: the most common frame to use when the characters are having a conversation. However, one frame usually only focuses on one of the characters
Figure 2.4.5 Over-the-shoulder shot example
  • Point of view shots: Makes the audience feel present in the scene. The frame can take any subject perspective, whether it's a person, an animal, a spirit, or any other creature. In this shot, we usually also hear what the subject's perspective hears.

  • Insert Shot: framing an activity that is done to objects. Can be combined with a POV shot (first person, third person, or hybrid)

PRACTICAL

Physical collage: In this exercise, we were told to collect materials such as old magazines, scissors, and glue. We were required to make 3 compositions out of elements from the old magazines. Below are the designs I have created.
Figure 2.5.1 Physical collage 1

This collage talks about how most girls has the urge to satisfy societal standard about beauty which make a lot of girls put aside things that they actually love just to put their time and effort to look beautiful.

Figure 2.5.2 Physical collage 2

This collage represent the feeling of being overstimulated. The feeling of having your senses being overly sensitive. Its the feeling of when your eyes starts focusing on every single thing and your ear starts to listen to every sound.

Figure Physical collage 3 (FINAL)

This composition is a memorial of how respected the queen Elizabeth was. She was a monarch that has a great impact on her people on her country
