WEEKLY SUMMARY

Week 6

This week I am starting to make the final design by listing the ideas of what form of artwork/design I will make. I decided to have 3 preliminaries: animated GIFs, Digital posters, and Digital Collage. Then I made a mood board of the concept I wanted to make and searched for inspirations.

Week 7

In this final week, I finished up my final project which was a Digital poster. I start first by recreating the sketch as the lecturer suggests to change the composition to be more dynamic so that it looks more interesting. Then I proceed to do the line art, colors, and finally the typography.

Concept and Sketches

Making Process

Mr. Charles was happy with the idea of the third sketch. However, he suggests making the composition more dynamic. Therefore, I created a sketch with the figure having a different pose, making it look like it coming more towards the frame. This creates emphasis on the main subject. The pose of the figure is inspired by the Silver Surfer as this character shows good reference to surfing poses.

After creating the sketch, I did the line art. The style of the lineart was inspired by the game Borderlands as it has a similar concept to my sketch. I was inspired by how the lineart in the Borderlands game has distinct lines, from dark and thick lines to light and thin lines. For my illustration, I apply dark lines to the areas where shadows would occur while light and thin lines are in the areas where light reflects the figure's body.

For the colors, I choose bold colors. I mainly focus on emphasizing the complementary color combination of vibrant blue and yellow. I also focus on the lighting and shadow to make an intense effect on the artwork and also create a focus on the figure. I also, differ in the shading style of the background and figure by not adding too many details to the background. However, I gave elements that are enough to convey the narrative of the illustration. To convey it, I illustrated a pile of trash and plastic waste.

After being satisfied with my illustration, I transferred the file to Photoshop and created the text. I choose to give a simple quote that says "Consume or Collapse?". I feel like this quote compliments the message of raising awareness about overconsumption. I choose to design it with a bold font. I also chose to make the collapsed writing look like it is shattered to add an intense effect to it.

Title: Consume or Collapse?

Rafa Maritza Hertrian

Media: Digital Poster

Size: A4

Rationale

"Consume or Collapse?" was created due to the emphasis on responsible consumption and production, the 12th UNSGD. It advocates for waste reduction and pollution mitigation as crucial for the preservation of marine ecosystems, highlighting the tremendous impact of human activities on ocean health. It illustrates sustainable methods, such as reducing the use of single-use plastics, and emphasizes the need for group efforts in protecting the oceans.

The artwork, which takes inspiration from the famous "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa," contrasts the beauty of the ocean with the stark reality of contamination, represented by a surfer navigating waves contaminated with trash. This artwork conjures us a grim future in which the consequences of overconsumption taint leisure activities. The artwork invites viewers to ponder on our societal direction by using humor as a means of engagement.

The statement that goes with it, "Consume or Collapse?" highlights how urgent the situation is and encourages reflection and action. "Consume or Collapse?" aims to spark conversation and inspire positive change through a blend of powerful language and visual symbolism. This aligns with the UNSGD's goals of promoting responsible consumption practices for a healthy world and seas.

FEEDBACK

Week 6

I consulted my sketches with Mr. Charles and out of the three sketches he said that the third one was the most intriguing. He asked me which one I wanted to proceed making and I also chose the third sketch. Mr. Charles said the concept was already good, but he suggested making the proportion more dynamic. Meaning that I have to define the perspective of the sketch.

Week 7

After creating a sketch with more dynamics, I consulted Mr. Charles again, and he said it was a lot better than the first sketch. Therefore, I proceeded with my task.

REFLECTION

Experience

This project was enjoyable for me because the lecturers gave the students the freedom to choose whatever form of art or design they wanted to make. This was very exciting for me as I had the opportunity to show the area that I am most confident with, which is digital drawing.

Observation

I noticed when I was doing this project I focused on conveying the message by utilizing the principles of design. For example, I use complementary colors to create a contrast between nature and the waste that is destroying it.

Findings

It is important to not only focus on blurting out visual elements but also on knowing what's the purpose of each element and what role are they playing in the design. Design principles should be implied to emphasize a focus and bringing the whole element into one piece of artwork.
