RESEARCH

Ideation
To start this project, Ms Lilian instructed everyone to come up with brand ideas and answer the questions below:

1. Your career/ your business
2. What services/products are you offering?
3. How do you differentiate yourself from others? (uniqueness of career)
4. Who will be interested in your product or service?
5. Name & Rationale

Below are my Ideas

IDEA 1
  1. Acne-friendly healthy food
  2. The business will focus on providing food menus that will prevent acne breakouts
  3. The products are more specified for people who struggle with acne
  4. People who have acne-prone skin are easily affected by the food they consume
  5. Mouthful of glow: Mouthful of Glow provides delicious and acne-friendly everyday meals. The goal is to help people who struggle with acne-prone skin find food suitable for their skin and gut health. Mouthful of Glow also offers products that can help reduce acne.

IDEA 2
  1. Apartment Residence for students
  2. The business will focus on providing a place to live for students
  3. The interior of the apartment will embrace art and functionality
  4. Students that need a place to rent near their campus
  5. Opulent Resident: Opulent Residence provides a comfortable and functional space for students to achieve their best condition to acquire knowledge. Most importantly, Opulent Residence embraces traditional artistic interior design to make living here enjoyable to view.

IDEA 3
  1. Modest clothing brand
  2. The brand will consist of hijab-friendly clothing products
  3. It will focus on comfort and design variations
  4. People who wears hijab or people who prefer modest clothing options
  5. Modestique: Modestique aims to make it easier for hijabis or people who prefer modest clothing choose their outfits
After a discussion with Ms. Lilian, I have decided that I will choose the first idea for this project because I think it is a pretty unique and rare business in the real world. I did the mind-mapping for the business and the brand name to expand the idea.

Secondary research

Ingredients to avoid
Regarding the relationship between diet or nutrition and acne, there is a ton of false information and inaccurate information on the Internet. While the exact origin of acne remains a topic of much controversy, certain foods are generally accepted to have a greater impact on skin health, including the development of acne, than others. Among the worst offenders are some of these.

  1. Milk and dairy products: They frequently have high hormone concentrations, which encourage the creation of oil and clog pores.
  2. Alcoholic beverages: Due to its inflammatory properties, alcohol makes pre-existing skin issues like acne worse and encourages new outbreaks. Add to that the fact that a lot of exotic cocktails and alcoholic drinks have a lot of sweet ingredients in them. According to A. Vogel, sugar and alcohol both have pro-inflammatory properties, making them a double-edged sword for acne. Dehydration is yet another reason alcohol is detrimental to skin health. Breakouts result from your body having to generate extra oil as a result of this.
  3. Refined Carbohydrates: Bread, sugar, white rice, white flour, and related foods fall within this category. All of them, including sugar, as previously noted, increase inflammation, which can be particularly harmful to those who already have skin prone to acne by lengthening and increasing the frequency of breakouts.
  4. High-glycemic Food:Choose foods with lower glycemic index numbers, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, artichokes, asparagus, leafy greens, beans, watercress, radishes, and water chestnuts. These foods actually help to soothe the skin and do not cause wild fluctuations in blood glucose levels. In addition to refined carbohydrates, some high-glycemic foods can also lead to more inflammation and create greater difficulty controlling acne. These foods include things like: Potatoes, Parsnips, Carrots, and Watermelon. Many of them even look healthy at first glance, though they can cause wild fluctuations in blood glucose levels that increase inflammation.
  5. Fatty Food: The pro-inflammatory cytokines found in fried and highly processed foods high in trans fats cause skin to become red and blotchy, which makes it easier for blemishes to develop.
  6. Why protein powder: According to Healthline, research has shown a direct correlation between male athletes' whey protein consumption and acne, as well as a relationship between the severity and length of acne outbreaks in individuals who take whey protein supplements.
  7. Highly Processed Convenience Foods: This includes a broad range of meals that are high in fats that are harmful, full of substances that aggravate skin, and shockingly high in refined sugars, flours, and other carbohydrates. They are generally less expensive and might simplify meal preparation, but they are bad for skin that is prone to acne.
  8. Chocolate: Although the main element in chocolate is not the main offender, milk chocolate and lighter chocolates are very effective in aggravating acne. For those looking to clear their skin, WebMD suggests going for dark chocolate, which is produced with less refined sugar and milk.
  9. Chicken: Similar to dairy, chicken frequently contains extra hormones that may cause inflammation and increase your skin's susceptibility to breakouts.
  10. Coffee: For certain individuals, the issue lies in the additional sugar and dairy they mix with the coffee. Some people find that their first cup of coffee in the morning gives them a surge of "adrenaline" that helps them get going. Regrettably, it also raises cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone that can intensify oil production and lead to acne.

PROCESS

MIND MAPPING
After choosing the type of business that I wanted to work on, I made a mind map to expand my idea so that I get a better picture of what I actually wanted to do with the brand. I started by mind-mapping the concept of acne-friendly food retail. This forced me to think of the components that are potentially required in the business which helps me understand the path of my progress. Then, I start to mind-map the brand name that I have come up which is "Mouthful of Glow". I used jam board to mind-map this so that it is easier to put my ideas.

After a discussion with my classmate about my mind map, I realized that I was missing some points and I needed to add visualizations. Below is the revised version of the mind map.

SKETCHES
With the help of the mindmap, I develop some potential logo sketches. My main 3 Ideas for the sketch include:
  1. Jellyfish mascot: because jellyfish are glowing, it represents glowing skin. In most of the sketches, I made the Jellyfish seem like they were eating (holding a spoon and fork).
  2. Clam and pearl: this can be a metaphor for "mouthful of glow" since clams look like open mouths and the pearl inside represents the glow.
  3. A girl eating while wearing a facial mask and cucumber.

After discussing the sketches with my classmates, I have decided that a girl eating while wearing a facial mask and cucumber is the best visualization of the business because it is a simple and obvious idea. Then, I refined this concept to several sketches so that I could find a sketch that I thought would be perfect for the brand.

DIGITALIZATION

After deciding on the sketches I should create further as my logo, I started to digitalize them using Adobe Illustrator. In this step, I digitalized 2 different types of mascots, one is more rounded and symmetrical while the other one is more oval-shaped. I also tried different places of the brand title. I tried wrapping around the brand title around the mascot, above and under, and just under.

Figure 1 First Digitalization
After consultation with Ms. Lilian, she suggested that I go with the more rounded design rather than the oval-shaped mascot. This is because the circle-shaped mascot looks more symmetrical and the details of the logo are more prominent. Therefore, I proceeded to reconstruct the logo more rationally.

After several reconstructions, this is my final rationalized logo. I tried to balance the black space and the outlines to look good in black and white.

After that, I added the logo typography. It consists of a bubbly, fun-looking font called "Baby Gemoy" wrapped around the mascot circularly. This gives the brand a fun, young, and welcoming impression.

Then I tried several color palettes to be the logo color. I initially wanted to include the color green for the cucumber, blue because it connects with cleanliness, and pink because it reminded me of one type of clay mask. I didn't find any of the color palette below amusing, hence I choose something similar myself.

This is the final color palette I choose. I figured that the pink color for the mask made the mascot look pale so I changed it to blue. I also thought that having only 2 hues in the logo might make it more memorable. I choose to keep green because I set that the cucumber must be green so that the viewers are aware of what it is.

Animation

Animation Plan:
  • mascot appears by opacity
  • face moving up and down
  • hand moving in and out
  • text appears per letter from the left by size
First I animated the hand and head movement of the mascot

Then I animated the brand title.

FEEDBACK

Week 1
Specific Feedback:  Out of 3 brand ideas, me and Ms Lilian agreed to proceed with the acne-friendly food retail that I have come up with. Ms Lilian instructed to make the business and brand name mindmap to expand my idea.

Week 2
General Feedback: Make at least 2 pages of A4 paper for the logo sketch. Do not use colors for the sketches.
Specific Feedback: For the business mindmap, add the ingredients that are good for the skin because most of the food that is not allowed is mostly nutritional. Elaborate on the business visualization, this can include the shop style. Expand more into the brand design.

Week 3
General Feedback: Start on the logo sketches.
Specific Feedback: Elaborate more on the mind map. For example, add the foods that are good for the skin and how the restaurant will make the food if most of the ingredients to avoid are nutritious food. Also, add visualization on the mindmap.

Week 4
General Feedback: Reconstruct logo sketches (final sketches) next week the official logo will be chosen
Specific Feedback: The logo that stood out the most is the human mascot. This is because the sketches represent something related to skincare and eating.

Week 5
General Feedback: Digitalize the sketch
Specific Feedback: The full-body mascot might take away the direct message of the logo, hence, it is better to proceed with the head-only mascot. The mascot with headband and facemask is more suitable for the brand because the towel on the head might make the brand seem like a spa brand.

Week 6
General Feedback: Follow the document guide from MyTimes for the submission.
Specific Feedback: Consider the outline thickness so that it is more visible up afar. For the space Rationalization, make sure to add the ratios of circles to one another, and explain how they are connected to each other. Don't make other slides colored except the logo with color and brand color section. Make the rest in black and white.
