RESEARCH
I chose these references because I want to make my brand guideline look fun and colorful like these. This is because Mouthful of Glow is targeted toward younger generation.
PROCESS
Deciding grid system
The first thing I did was make several grid system choices in
Indesign. Below are the choices:
Grid System 1
Row and Column: 4x4
Gutter: 12px

Grid System 2
Row and Column: 6x6
Gutter: 0 px
Grid System 3
Row and column: 8x8
Gutter 0 px
I thought more grids would give me more flexibility to make the
layout, so I chose the 8x8. From that grid, I designed some of the
page layout for the brand guideline without applying color images
and decorative elements yet.
After a group discussion in class I realized that I made some
mistakes when creating the grid system. When I made the first grid
system. I used the "create guides" feature from Indesign. Which is
different from what was told. I was suppose to use the "Margin and
Columns". And Ms Lilian suggested that my layout lacked margins,
hence, it would make the design look a bit separated from each
other and creating too much white spaces.
From these suggestions, I created another layout and also
apply the brand colors. I also added pictures to see how to fit
images into my brand guidelines.
I felt that the brand guidelines were too bland and that the
brand Identity was not really showing. Therefore, I added
elements from the brand, which are circles (the brand logo is
mainly made from circles), cucumbers, and a flower made from
cucumber seeds.
Then I made some of the layout such as the landing page, and
some content pages. I also tried to incorporate some images
because that's what was recommended from Ms Lilian.
After consulting with Ms Lilian and some of my classmates, I
realized that my brand guidelines might need more images to
elevate the look. Hence, I added more images while also trying
to incorporate them into the brand guidelines.
I was also suggested to increase the leading because it would
make the body texts more readable. This would help with the
color of the background the the text since it is not really
contrasting.
From this:
To this:
Next, made the application section since I haven't created
it yet. I tried to make the collateral look united with the
page instead of just putting the mockup image. My goal is to
make it look interesting.
Finally, I added the interactive buttons. I put contents,
visual guidelines, applications, and the back and next
buttons. We were told to make the buttons look blended in with
the brand guideline design. I didn't catch that pretty well so
I just made the buttons similar color as the background and
elements. But then I realized that it wouldn't be
visible.
After another consultation, some somethings needed to be fixed. The obvious one was the buttons. Ms. Lilian suggested incorporating the used color from the brand guidelines.
I decided to make the "menu bar" with lighter font colors for the landing page since it has a darker background. This is so that the writings would be more visible. I also made the page it is in a different color to identify that the viewer is in that section of the visual guideline.
For other pages, it would have the dark blue color font because of the background of the content pages are lighter.
Other than that, I just realized that I haven't fixed the leading on the target audience page. Ms Lilian suggested if it is too cramped up it is better to make the target audience more than one page. She also said to change the target audience according to different types of segmentations.
FEEDBACK
WEEK 10 25 NOVEMBER 2024
FEEDBACK
Do not add page numbers to the content page. Make the margin closer to the center so that the contents do not look too far apart. The grid system might be too complex, it needs to have a gutter. Pay attention to the letter spacing and leading, and make sure there are no orphans. If there are too many white spaces, add images. To reference images, just overlap the citation on the image with a lower opacity.
NEXT PLAN OF ACTION
Make the margin closer to the center, redo the content page, change the grid system and the page size to the correct one, and create the rest of the pages while also including the colors and images.
WEEK 11 02 DECEMBER 2024
FEEDBACK
Suggested to make the leading bigger so it is easier to read. Apply more images to the brand guidelines. Make the interactive buttons blend in with the brand guidelines.
NEXT PLAN OF ACTION
Revise the body text, make the rest of the pages (visual guidelines and application), and make the buttons.
WEEK 12 09 DECEMBER 2024
FEEDBACK
The buttons are not visible, try to figure out a way to make it visible while also being considerate of how it looks on each page. Make the target audience according to different types of segmentations.
NEXT PLAN OF ACTION
Fix the button and target the audience.
SUBMISSION
REFLECTION

Experience
Making this brand guideline is so far the most fun and challenging task for this module. I am satisfied to see how my brand come together from the logo to the application. However, it was very challenging because there was a lot to do and I was not used to using Indesign for a task. But in the end, I was happy to see the brand guidelines that I had created.
Observation
In a brand guideline, it is recommended to use as many images as possible which can directly tell the viewers what the brand is about. This is because people grasp information from visuals more easily. It is also important to make sure the brand guidelines portray the overall tone of the brand. For example, Mouthful of Glow tends to be a welcoming and friendly brand, hence, the design should look more bright and fun.
Findings
In a layout, it is important to determine the grid system and the margins. The margins is important to make sure the elements are not too far from the center. This would minimize unnecessary white space. The grid system is important to make the layout look consistent and neat.
